Mainer nominated as U.S. Ambassador to Algeria

A Maine native has been tapped by President Bush to be the U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
The president is nominating David D. Pearce, of Virginia, to be ambassador to Algeria, according to a White House statement released yesterday.
Pearce, who grew up in Falmouth and attended Bowdoin College, is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. He most recently served as senior advisor to Ambassador Ryan Crocker in Baghdad. Prior to that, he served as minister counselor for political affairs at the U.S. embassy in Rome. Earlier in his career, he served as consul general and chief of mission in Jerusalem.
Pearce could not be reached for comment this afternoon, but his father, Dwayne Pearce of Falmouth, said he and his wife are “quite honored” to learn of the nomination. It now goes to the U.S. Senate for confirmation, Dwayne Pearce said.
David Pearce was born in Portland and attended Cheverus High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin in 1972, majoring in classics, and his master’s degree from Ohio State University, where he studied journalism. His father said David Pearce previously was a journalist in Rome and Beirut and also worked for The Washington Post and National Geographic.
