City's offer to allow worship in building for Ramadan fails

Post by libertarianandproud on Sat Aug 15, 2009 5:46 am

PORTLAND — City officials have offered to allow a group of Afghan Muslims to worship in a building on Washington Avenue while looking for a site that doesn't conflict with Portland's zoning.

But the Maine Civil Liberties Union, which is representing the group in a federal lawsuit filed Thursday, has rejected the offer because it would require the group to find a new place of worship
When they applied to the city for a permit to allow religious activities there, the city denied it in April because the property does not meet zoning requirements for that use. The ordinance in that mixed-use zone of homes and businesses requires that a property be at least an acre to be used for a religious purpose.

The lot at 978 Washington Ave. is about one-third of an acre and lacks the required parking spaces

The Law is already in place , I do not believe there is any discrimination here besides Portland is a City of Liberals who like to kiss the asses of minorities, to show how compassionate they are .

the laws are there for everybody to follow, so are appeals. i don't see any reason for an exception to be made in this situation.
